John M. Young manufactured and sold carriages, a business started by his father. This building on C Street constructed in 1885 served as shop for his carriages. Like many carriage makers, Young was successful and invested in real estate, including two other properties designed by Cluss, a store and residences on Pennsylvania Avenue (1879) and a row of stores and residences on Seventh Street NW (1883).
